Cheap and Toxic-Free Alternatives for Fabric Softener
Fabric softeners can make your clothes soft and static-free. They even leave very fragrant smell to your newly-washed clothes making them feel clean and fresh. But are you aware that fabric softeners are toxic as they contain chemicals that can be damaging to your lungs, nerves and brain. The Allergy and Environmental Health Association lists fabric softeners both the liquid and sheet kinds as being “the most toxic product produced for daily household use.” These products that are supposedly making our life pleasant turn out to be a culprit as they bring damaging effects to our health.
So if you still have fabric softeners stock in your laundry area, better stash them now in the garbage bin. Don’t worry, there are other alternatives that you can go for to make your clothes soft and static-free. These are even cheaper options and some of them you can already find in your household.
1.Vinegar – Use 1/2 cup in the wash cycle. (But don’t use bleach at the same time—mixing vinegar and bleach may create toxic fumes.)
2.Baking soda – Add a a quarter cup of baking soda to your wash cycle.
3.Glycerin – Add one cup of glycerine to one galloon of water to the wash or rinse cycle. Glycerin is a colorless and odorless compound that is available cheap at your local natural market.
4.Aluminum foil – Put a ball of aluminum foil in the dryer to make them static free.
5.Tennis Ball – Buy cheap tennis ball and put them in the dryer. They create air pockets that help your clothes dry better and fluffier.
6.Go for the cheapest alternative. Instead of drying your clothes in the dryer, hang them outside until completely dry. Throw them in the dryer for just 5 minutes to soften them.
